I know what you’re thinking, “SAS already backs up my data, why should I invest in Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well?” Let me explain how AWS expands on SAS’s backup and recovery capabilities.
Out of the box, SAS will only create backups of metadata on a daily basis and keep a rolling 7 days of valid backups before rotating one of them out for a newer one. A backup of the SAS configuration is also taken on a weekly basis, which SAS calls the central vault.
Here’s the catch.
SAS’s backups are of a point in time of only your metadata. So if you have one metadata object on a server that you want to revert back to an earlier version, you have to roll back the whole meta repository. You can’t just recover the object individually. Since SAS only backs up your metadata, it will not back up your program files, data, or other critical system files, unless they are contained within the metadata. By combining the capabilities of AWS and SAS, you can recover an earlier version of a single report, table, log, object, or any other file on the server.
By hosting your data and solutions with AWS, you get a more granular level of recovery, on all objects and all files, and you also get recovery models tailored to your recovery time objectives, which we will talk about in our next email.

You can’t talk about data without talking about security compliance and regulations. That’s another area where backup and recovery on Amazon Web Services (AWS) can help.
AWS keeps your data secure and encrypted in the cloud. Amazon also handles the physical security of your servers at their high security sites.
Be confident that your backup environment hasn’t been tampered with. AWS’s checksums make sure your backup hasn’t been tampered with before you restore it.
Lastly, organizations required by regulations and compliance policies to archive and keep massive amounts of data can use Glacier on AWS. Glacier allows you to archive large amounts of data in a cost effective way. You can move data to Glacier using AWS’s API or create lifecycle policies within S3 that automatically move it into a Glacier vault after a period of time defined by your lifecycle policy. The data itself is encrypted and Amazon ensures a 99.999999999% durability for each archive uploaded.
